The MBBS/MD program is a medical undergraduate degree program that is typically completed over a period of 5-6 years, depending on the country and university. The program is designed to train students to become medical doctors, who are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to provide healthcare services to individuals, families, and communities. The MBBS program typically comprises two phases: the pre-clinical phase and the clinical phase. During the pre-clinical phase, students focus on learning the basic sciences related to medicine, such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, and microbiology. This phase is usually completed over the first two years of the program. Indian students who have completed their medical education abroad are required to undergo a mandatory one-year internship in the same institution as a part of their medical education. The internship is a crucial aspect of the medical curriculum and provides medical graduates with practical training and experience that prepares them for the challenges of medical practice in India.
During the internship period, medical graduates from foreign medical institutions work in hospitals and healthcare centers, where they are exposed to a variety of medical cases and procedures. They are supervised by experienced medical professionals who guide them in their training and ensure that they acquire the necessary clinical skills and competencies. In the clinical phase, students gain practical experience by rotating through different departments in hospitals and clinics, working with patients under the supervision of experienced doctors. This phase typically includes courses in internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, and community medicine. The clinical phase is usually completed over the remaining 3-4 years of the program. Throughout the program, students also receive training in communication skills, ethics, professionalism, and research methods, which are essential for practicing medicine effectively and responsibly.
INTERNSHIP
The internship period is also an opportunity for medical graduates from foreign medical institutions to gain exposure to the Indian healthcare system and become familiar with the prevailing healthcare practices and protocols in the country. This enables them to understand the unique healthcare challenges in India and prepare themselves to provide high-quality medical care to patients.
